I retired from there in 2002 to do consulting with ministries of education, multinational organizations, and high tech companies on technology policies that would improve education systems and prepare students for the knowledge economy and information society. My biggest clients were Intel, UNESCO, and government agencies in Singapore, Thailand, Chile, Norway, Jordan, and Egypt. I did probono work in rural villages in Kenya. Prior to SRI, I was a professor and research scientist at the University of Michigan where I taught grade courses in instructional design, software design, and instructional psychology. I started my career as a grade school math teacher in the inner city of Detroit. I've always considered myself as a designer, from the time in my junior year in high school that I won a contest sponsored by the aeronautical engineering department at the University of Detroit with a space suit i designed. I designed innovative lesson plans as a grade school teacher. I designed research studies and graduate courses as a university professor and I designed software systems at SRI. As a consultant, I helped governments design policies that used technology to improve their education systems. In my retirement, I wrote a book on design, "Make the World a Better Place: Design with Passion, Purpose, and Values", that was recently published by John Wiley & Sons. Up Up < Back Networks & Communities All around the world Creative | Innovators | Designers are building networks and communities surrounding their passions. Join them! Network s & Communitie s are the backbone of the CID Profe ss ional Growth S ector. To enable CID professionals to unite and connect with likeminded people who share interests, professions, industries ot topics, regionally or globally, we have created the Networks & community area. We tackle tis in three main ways. Networks & Community List. The list contains networks & communities that have been added to date, when you click on read more, you find an info page with more details. In general details can be added to the list by anyone and not all the entities on the list are connected to Design in Focus. Networks & Communities experience portals 2 ways. We create experience portals for existing entities that we collaborate with such as Ladies that UX , We create experience portals for new entities who use the Design in Focus platform to create, manage or organise their networks and communities. The entity can be fully independent, using their own brand and tools. E.g, and experience portal with external links to Meetup, Slack, Concord or whatever other platform they may wish to use. The entity can be partially independent, using their own brand and tools as well as using some of our tools for example groups or events, or creating multimedia with us about their efforts. The entity can be a division, sister, pipeline, specific topic, region, language or interest group of the Design in Focus brand. For example the network RANDSTAD UX (R'UX) has been created as a regional interest group part of the design category of Design in Focus. Although it has a branded experience, the brand was developed using the Design in Focus media kit. R'UX has monthly meetups which are published on the design in focus events page and content such as presentations and talks by the network is added to the galleries. Additionally there is also a linked group in which members can have discussions, share media, view events and network with each other. Furthermore the presenters and speakers are listed under our factions list. Design in Focus Groups CID professionals may choose to create a group based on their existing networks & communities, or they may use the groups to start their own networks and communities. Delve into the deep meaning behind these contrasting concepts and their profound connection to the world of design. We'll explore how design intersects with nature and nurture, and the impactful implications our decisions as designers have on the existential plane. Decoding "Nature or Nurture" "Nature or Nurture" refers to the longstanding debate in psychology and philosophy about the relative contributions of genetics (nature) and environmental factors (nurture) in shaping human behavior and characteristics. In our panel, we'll extend this concept to the world of design, where we explore the interplay of inherent creativity (nature) and the influences and experiences that shape our design practice (nurture). Nature and Design: Embracing the Organic Nature and design share a deep connection in their essence of creation. We'll delve into how design often draws inspiration from the natural world - its patterns, colors, and forms. At the same time, design plays a pivotal role in preserving and enhancing the beauty and sustainability of nature through eco-conscious practices and biophilic design. Nurture and Design: Cultivating Growth Nurture, like design, is about nurturing and cultivating growth. Designers have the unique power to shape experiences and environments that foster human development, personal growth, and well-being. Our discussion will explore how design creates nurturing spaces that influence emotions, behaviors, and interactions, from spaces that promote learning to those that encourage social connections. The Impact of Design on Our Existential Plane Design holds tremendous potential to impact our existential plane, shaping the very fabric of our lives and experiences. From the products we use to the places we inhabit, design permeates our existence. We'll explore how design can enhance our relationship with nature, uplift our spirits, and create more harmonious and nurturing environments. Topics for Designers to Consider Biophilic Design: Connecting with Nature in Built Environments Sustainable Materials and Practices: Nurturing the Environment Inclusivity in Design: Nurturing Diversity and Equality User Experience and Emotions: The Psychological Impact of Design Designing for Well-being: Nurturing Mental and Physical Health Ethical Design: Balancing Human Needs and Environmental Impact Adaptive Design: Adapting to Nature's Changing Patterns Green Architecture: Integrating Buildings with Nature Regenerative Design: Sustaining and Enhancing Natural Systems Cultural Influences: The Nurturing Power of Design in Different Societies Embrace the Duality: Nature vs. Nurture in Design Decisions As designers, we must navigate the duality of nature and nurture in our creative decisions. Every choice we make has implications on the environment and human experiences. Balancing the two forces, we shape designs that align with our intrinsic nature while nurturing a sustainable and inclusive future.
