LADIES THAT UX “A community of women in UX who support each other, push the UX boundaries, and promote skill and talent” SUMMARY Each city runs slightly different events, and each group decides what they want to get out of their get-togethers. Sometimes there’s a speaker or a theme, sometimes we just eat, drink, and see where the conversation goes. The one thing we can guarantee is that you won’t feel pressurised to present. The atmosphere is relaxed and informal, and if you want help with a particular UX challenge, you’ll find plenty of willing problem-solvers. TALKS ABOUT Any and all topics related to User Experience Design from the Feminine Perspective. Learn More OUR COLLABORATION Design inFocus was founded in Amsterdam, the Netherlands where we are also the most connected. We have interacted with the Dutch chapters of Ladies that UX in Amsterdam & Utrecht. To demonstrate the potential of networks & communities and using our platform, we created our first flagship network RANDSTAD UX (R'UX) and have started collaborating within our industry. Through Design in Focus, we created an experience page with the Utrecht chapter leader, Kimberly Snoyl and in January 2023 we collaborated with the Amsterdam chapter leader Claudia Muller for an interactive discussion event entitled Design for Good : AI & Ethics which was hosted at PwC Experience center in Amsterdam. Home Themes Events Speakers 2024 Calling all Design Leaders, Let me take you back to 2008—the year I embarked on my journey as a community creator. Everything was going well, and within just a few months, we became a strong community of over 4000 members. But fate took a dark turn when an individual decided to derail our purpose by turning the group into something unrelated and inappropriate. It was disapointing to witness the community I built become so tainted, and I had no choice but to step away. Fast forward to 2011, and I found myself in a new country—energized to connect with South Africans in Madeira. We grew 600+ strong and when I organised a picnic in the mountain, we filled the entire campsite. I stood by the entrance excitedly welcoming people and everyone asked about Jose while ignoring me. Who was Jose? Jose was a guy who started telling everyone that he had founded and organised the group and picnic. Well, forward to today and here I am aware that a handful of people in my network are reaping the rewards of my efforts. The thing is, these are people who take other people's ideas because they are too disinvested to ideate. I am intuitive and care about my network. I listen, I watch. When I create an event or activity, it's because I have spoken to the people. I have heard them, and I have seen and acknowledged their strengths and thoughts. But then you get the copy cats, who not only copy you but they try to devalue at every opportunity, they ignore your offer for collaboration and they compete with you by messaging your your community with their activities strategically scheduled to force a choice. The nuisance is the hoohoo haha collectives catch and convince others USING YOUR STOLEN WORDS AND IDEAS. For the awareness week, I would love to hear from design leaders who might be interested in talking or presenting on this topic, and related topics. Every day I see posts incentivising people to steal like artists. This is utter garbage. I see posts promoting idea theft as if it were some form of art. It's time to dispel this notion. Idea theft is not a sign of creativity; it's a symptom of uninspired, apathetic individuals from all walks of life. So, how do we deal with this? How do we protect our ideas, encourage collaboration, and build an inspiring, respectful environment? Design Pro Defence - Empowering Designers for Tomorrow Join us for a transformative series of events under the theme "Design Pro Defence" - an initiative dedicated to equipping designers with the tools they need to thrive in the ever-evolving world of design. • #ImpactCollective | Cédric Fettouche

< Back Cédric Fettouche Design strategist & Founder of Humanitarian Designers In 2017, after graduating from my Master's degree in Strategic design, I moved to Lesvos, Greece, to do humanitarian work. First to observe as a volunteer, then as a Project officer, I quickly learnt about project management: directing teams, liaising with partners and donors, managing logistics and conflicts, improving the internal and external communication, evaluating our impact. Passionate about design, I continued to have a design-led strategic approach on my daily tasks to break humanitarian assumptions. It generally meant to take a step back to reflect on a longer-term impact; then, to implement bottom-up co-creative methods to better reach social and environmental objectives. This humanitarian journey from a designer's perspective led me to work two years on Lesvos (Greece), then in Central Mediterranean Sea, and Tunisia. Seeing all these design opportunities, I founded the NGO Humanitarian Designers (HD) with the aim to bridge the gap between designers and NGOs, and guide motivated designers in their own committed journey. Today, it's a 450+ Slack members' community and our main past projects include a conference with 17 speakers in Paris and two courses about humanitarian design to design students from the Offenbach University (Germany) and ENSCI Les Ateliers (France). While managing voluntarily HD, I continued my professional journey with the team of the New European Bauhaus (European Commission) working on an initiative related to the creative sector and EU policies. My role as a policy assistant is to guide the bottom-up community of 600+ non-profit organisations with participatory workshops and activities. All together, we worked on better defining what it means to have a project that is simultaneously inclusive, sustainable, and beautiful. https://www.humanitariandesigners.org

  • Sara Dholakia

Up Up < Back Sara Dholakia Visual & UX Designer - IBM About Sara I'm currently a visual designer at IBM and work on user experience and visual design for digital experiences. Design has always been a passion of mine, but my academic background is in psychology. I worked in the field for a number of years conducting clinical and neuropsychological assessments with individuals with severe mental illness. It was rewarding work that taught me a lot, and I'm really grateful that I had the opportunity to do it. However, it helped me realize that I should pursue a career that would allow me to combine my love of psychology and passion for design. With the aid of books and free online resources, I've become a self-taught visual and web designer. In my five years of experience as a designer, I’ve worked directly with multi-disciplinary teams and cross-organizational stakeholders to craft delightful websites and mobile apps and am now very happy to be working with and learning from a team of really amazing strategists and designers. I'm incredibly passionate about inclusive design, and my presentation will provide general information about what inclusive design is, some best practices, and how designers and individuals in design-adjacent roles can apply it to their work. About the Event Inclusive Design for a Better World Inclusive design is more than a set of principles; it’s a mindset of creating products and experiences that meet the needs of people from diverse backgrounds and abilities.
