Up Up < Back Cecilia Scolaro Responsible Design advocate and consultant About Cecilia A shift is happening towards better consideration of humanity and our planet in business, policy, civil society and consumer behaviour. As Designers and professionals of the Digital industry we need to talk about the harms that our profession has contributed to. Technology has certainly opened up many possibilities but it has also exacerbated inequalities, created an 'attention economy', contributed to a business culture based on exploitation and mindless experimentation. These practices have real consequences on people, society and the planet. Some of you already know a lot about Design in Focus and some of you are learning and some of you are still in the discovery phase. With some of you we have already created content, with others we are planning sessions and collaborations. Many of you have been entered into the the #CID Quality Awards, and some have joined the members area. Although we are not all aligned yet, with this page we seek to demonstrate some key areas that we think could be interesting not only for our efforts but connecting relevant stakeholders to enable them to go above and beyond. If you already know about Design in Focus, you can continue to the next section (but maybe you are not yet aware of our plan to register as a foundation, then it could be interesting to read on), for the rest here is a quick intro. The foundation of Design in Focus was seeded in May this year when I, Candice Storm, was asked by a friend to produce a podcast for him and work on his professional branding as a creative. I had never intended to produce podcasts and has had to learn quite a bit (and the first recordings were not exactly quality). Yet, many experienced pro's saw the potential of what I wanted to achieve and encouraged me to really have a go at it. If you would like to understand the scope of Design in Focus, please read this article . In the past five months I've conceptualised, developed, designed, & published the platform and associated media channels. I've also onboarded many of you and have recorded sessions with you, as well as discussed some ideas. Some of you want to collaborate or sponsor, which is great, and even better now that we have decided to register as a foundation. The reason for that is so that everyone feels secure that this platform is created for their profit as professionals and industry makers. Although we are seeking to collaborate with others, the goal is really value & impact geared for and by CID people. As such we give you our word of honour that however you participate, you will never be exploited or abused. On the contrary, Design in Focus aims to connect relevant stakeholders to generate greater successes. Please read on to see some examples of how we think we can add value to your efforts. Welcome Relevant for everyone 1. You are all an inspiration in your field and as such I wish to have a talk or two with you (for the ones who I have not yet organised anything with), to create multimedia such as audio / video podcasts and articles etc to publish in our galleries and media channels, as well as an experience page if you choose. Learn about the scope of Design in Focus or Read more here under join as a participant . 2. All of you are excellent Dream Team Roundtable candidates and some of you have already signed up to join Dream Team Roundtable sessions or indicated interest in them. 3. We've had an idea courtesy of Linda Holleman , which we still have to confirm and plan fully, but it would be nice to start considering if you would like to partake in a Dream Team Roundtable session. Linda is busy with organising the Immersive tech week event in Amsterdam and we had a conversation about organising a live session or two of the Dream Team Roundtable at the event. The details will follow when we have made concrete plans, but if anyone is already interested please fill out this form so that we can plan accordingly. By doing so you will enable me to create some concrete plans so that we can get the Dream Team sessions rolling and align with Linda. Below you will find some brainstorming session events planned for the coming weeks, if you would like to participate in #TheDreamTeamRoundtables for the immersive tech week or apart from that, jump into one of these calls and invite people who you think could be interesting to have in the groups. Also please join the #TheDreamTeamRoundtable page on Linkedin group where we will post confirmed topics and participants or signup to become a member and join our groups here. We don't collect any additional data from members and we don't use the data we have in any other way than to ensure the safety and security of those who are active on the platform and to filter out spam and bots. We will become a registered foundation not so long from now, which of course means that we don't profit financially from what we do, and that has never been the intention of this project. It does take time and effort to make this project valuable which costs money, but aside from covering costs and ensuring a continuation of the project for a long period of time and maybe to facilitate some of the projects we want to work on such as taking the challenges presented in The Dream Team Roundtable and attempting to apply them or realise them in reality, there is no other purpose for any monies involved. Some of you invited here are already busy with Web3 orientated media forms such as Midjourney and AR / VR and I thought that would be a perfect mix for The Creative Youth Festival which seeks to make the Creative Industry more inclusive to all practitioners regardless of seniority and economic standing. In South Africa in rural places there is very little available technologically. How about we create a session in which we tackle some of these issues to see if we can find creative ways to solve some of them? Many of you are also working on your own projects and concepts to give back and add value to the world. We can all come together and connect some dots to reveal a vision with real value and impact. It could also be interesting for you techy creators to get in touch with Linda Holleman apart from Design in Focus if you have personal interest (I can see potential). Apart from that we will still have regular sessions and you're welcome to join any time and with your own ideas. Jeroen Jonkers, Linda Holleman, Karabo Likhethe, Caroline Lindo, you guys should all connect independently also because i think your heads together can create some awesome new things. Everyone else, please let me know if you're interested or have any ideas of your own. Creaties Innovators Many of you added here are already building awesome new products and tools and I think you could all be valuable on the Dream Team Roundtables. Especially if we do the Immersive Tech Week, and now proposing to a couple of others, it would be cool to align and create more awareness. Andy Tulet, we have been looking to set up a podcast, would you be interested in joining a Roundtable digitally or online? The same goes for anyone else. I'm sure as a bunch of creatives, innovators and designers we could conceptualise great immersive tech solutions, what do you think? Of course the Immersive Tech Week is not set in stone yet, but we will still have #TheDreamTeamRoundtable sessions so the opportunity is still there. Maybe Tech Circus is interested in some way to take this idea to the next level (hint hint ;P). Either way, please let me know if you're interested or have any ideas. Innovators De s igner s You make up the bulk of my network and I have connected with many of you who I have found inspirational and as crucial players not only in our industry but also in society. I'm talking about those focused on solving real problems such as ethics and conscious behavior, climate and world events problem solvers dealing with circular design and sustainability, and community & network builders such as those who have local / international meetups, training, events, etc. Immersive tech is the future and due to your combined efforts, you are acting as instruments for the future, that is why I thought it could be interesting to do a session or two at the Immersive Tech Week event if that works out, where we demonstrate how the tools and ideas you're working on and with can help solve problems. Outside of the Immersive Tech Week, I would still love to have you on a session or two. Please let me know if you're interested or have any ideas of your own. Designers Organi s ation s Some of you who are invited here are creatives, innovators and designers who also have organisations such as meetup groups, networks, slack channels, you offer training and mentorship, others are making impact by offering business solutions and events, all contribute to CID profession and industry. For those who are trying to change the world, I thought it could be interesting if you came up with some challenges, which we present to the participants. Or if we hooked up to find participants for specific challenges, that could be cool too. I had a conversation with an HR person who thought that it could be interesting for companies who ask applicants to complete a challenge before hiring them, and who wishes to find ways of not having to doing so, or at least make it fun for the person, to get involved in one way or the other with #TheDreamTeamSessions. I'm in two minds, but if anyone is interested or agrees, I'd be open to hear more. Once the administration and documentation of registering as a Foundation is complete, I think we can find ways to work together to come up with a sleuth of ideas from which we can all win some of our goals. Because most of those that will see this page are driven to make positive impact, I believe that our combined efforts will enable us to collectively achieve greater heights. What i've tried to demonstrate on this page is how a small seed of an idea can be applied on various verticals. Immersive tech is aiming to achieve some great things, so is Design in Focus and many reading this, we needed some ideas for the Dream Team Roundtable and it's an interesting topic (I think) for those I'm involving. This is the type of interactions I am seeking to continue with others. Please let me know if you're interested or have any ideas of you would like to discuss. Organsatos Name s I originally started with a list of 125 people who will be receiving and invite to this page, so that they could network and meet, but decided to remove it until it's requested to be added out of respect for privacy. You can indicate in the registration form or you may email or message me directly here or on LinkedIn to have your details added to the list. If you signup to become members, I can display your details like mine below and you are then able to control who sees what. The idea behind adding names here is to indicate that you have interest in collaboration, not only with Design in Focus but those who are also listed here. Everyone invited to this page has been selected because they do great things and as such I would like to not only draw attention to them, but also enable all of us, as Trine Falbe said, "to do better than that". • Robert Kozma

Up Up < Back Robert Kozma Emeritus Principal Scientist at SRI International in Silicon Valley About Robert I'm an Emeritus Principal Scientist at SRI International in Silicon Valley where I did research and development on advanced technology systems in education. I retired from there in 2002 to do consulting with ministries of education, multinational organizations, and high tech companies on technology policies that would improve education systems and prepare students for the knowledge economy and information society. My biggest clients were Intel, UNESCO, and government agencies in Singapore, Thailand, Chile, Norway, Jordan, and Egypt. I did probono work in rural villages in Kenya. Prior to SRI, I was a professor and research scientist at the University of Michigan where I taught grade courses in instructional design, software design, and instructional psychology. I started my career as a grade school math teacher in the inner city of Detroit. I've always considered myself as a designer, from the time in my junior year in high school that I won a contest sponsored by the aeronautical engineering department at the University of Detroit with a space suit i designed. I designed innovative lesson plans as a grade school teacher. I designed research studies and graduate courses as a university professor and I designed software systems at SRI. As a consultant, I helped governments design policies that used technology to improve their education systems. In my retirement, I wrote a book on design, "Make the World a Better Place: Design with Passion, Purpose, and Values", that was recently published by John Wiley & Sons. Contribution (general) Robert is a member of Design in Focus, the platform that hosts Randstad UX, and Randstad UX (R'UX) is responsible for the launch of the Design for Tomorrow concept. UX | CI | DE S IGN IN FOCU S | CONTACT U S ER EXPERIENCE RE S EARCH Research and Analysis of corporate communication channels are important across multiple pillars of business, such as the value proposition you offer your customer, corporate behavior, or the actions inside the company that define its values and strategy. Understanding the problems your users / clients experience when using your product or service, and anticipating problems to avoid, by validating user personas and a user lifecycle funnels identifying key features / deliverables your users and clients most want. Through applying qualitive and quantative research methods, valuable business insights are gained, laying foundations to be implemented in Design & Strategy resulting in effective interaction. EYE TRACKING Use eye tracking to precisely measure user interactions with an interface and learn exactly which design elements people notice, how long they spend viewing them and in what order. Since human behavior follows the eyes, eye tracking is a natural and effective way to obtain insight into how users interact with a design. U S ER S URVEY S User Surveys are a great way to discover your users motivations and expectations, through in-depth conversations we can extract insights which is analyzed and measured to help craft a delightful brand experience. TREE TE S TING Run a tree testing study to evaluate whether your current or proposed navigation menu hierarchy allows people to find content on your site. Using tools such as Treejack we can evaluate findability topics such as how your audience finds what they’re looking for, which are valuable insights for evaluating your content architecture. CARD SORTING The card sorting method can be a valuable tool used to improve information architecture and navigation labels by learning how users expect information to be organized. DAIRY STUDIES By collecting user diary entries over time, we gain understanding in long-term interaction and conversion cycles. Do you know who your target users are? What do they need and want? Do you know what frightens them? What excites them? Would you like to know more about them? We would like to invite you to find out. StormCIS can conduct user experience research that will help you understand your intended users and their motivations more deeply. Get in touch.

  • About RANDSTAD UX | Design in Focus #CID

Collabs RANDSTAD UX A network serving UX professionals in the Randstad region. We organise UX and related events monthly, and offer some tools on this portal. Events We organise network events which you can find below, and we also have an UX calendar page where everyone is welcome to add their events to the listing page. The aim is to create an engaging UX industry for professionals in the Randstad. Collabs Through collaboration we can accomplish so much more. For those who collab with us and who talk, present or discuss UX at our events, we create info pages where you can learn more about them and get in touch. Notice Board At the end of this page you will find the Randstad UX notice Board. Here every UX professional can post notices to their peers. Share career opportunities, post meetup or hangout invitations, and any other notice worthy posts. If this takes off, we will create a seperate page for it. Orientation Page On the Orientation page you can find all the ways to get active in the network, from subscribing to the newsletter, to taking the stage out events and even other UX events. Aside from personal professional growth, companies and organisations can sign up to host events, sponsor us or our speakers to show dedication to UX professionals. While sponsoring and donations will make the most impact in enabling us to deliver value to UX professionals and industry, we get that sometimes it's good to get something in return for our money. That's why we have a merchandise line with some cool UX & R'UX related designs. Get yourself some high quality designer fashion with our graphics printed on them. We get a commision of about 10% which we use to strengthen the network. It's not much but if cool people wear our merch, we gain some visibility. P.s We have a line that we would like to use to gift to our speakers and presenters. For the more generous folk out there, you would be a super star if you gifted a speaker with one of these. LinkedIn Following us on LinkedIn is a great way to stay in the loop. We share news and content and invite you to use the page to post your relevant UX material too. If your inbox cant handle any more subscriptions and you do not want to subscribe, then LinkedIn is a great way to find out about UX activities in the Randstad. JOIN NOW Platform Group In this platform you can request to become a member and then join our Network group where we can have discussions and share media, as well as network with peers. JOIN NOW Facebook Find us on Facebook too. Btw, know someone who wants to gain experience as a social media manager? We are on the hunt for a volunteer who would like to add to their portfolio. • Sara Dholakia

Home Events Speakers 2024 Merchandise Sara Dholakia Visual & UX Designer - IBM In August Sara is talking about Inclusive design for a better world. About Sara I'm currently a visual designer at IBM and work on user experience and visual design for digital experiences. Design has always been a passion of mine, but my academic background is in psychology. I worked in the field for a number of years conducting clinical and neuropsychological assessments with individuals with severe mental illness. It was rewarding work that taught me a lot, and I'm really grateful that I had the opportunity to do it. However, it helped me realize that I should pursue a career that would allow me to combine my love of psychology and passion for design. With the aid of books and free online resources, I've become a self-taught visual and web designer. In my five years of experience as a designer, I’ve worked directly with multi-disciplinary teams and cross-organizational stakeholders to craft delightful websites and mobile apps and am now very happy to be working with and learning from a team of really amazing strategists and designers. I'm incredibly passionate about inclusive design, and my presentation will provide general information about what inclusive design is, some best practices, and how designers and individuals in design-adjacent roles can apply it to their work. About the Event Inclusive Design for a Better World Inclusive design is more than a set of principles; it’s a mindset of creating products and experiences that meet the needs of people from diverse backgrounds and abilities. Join me as I go over the principles of inclusive design and and an inclusive mindset and share ways everyone can apply these to their work. Visit the event page to learn more. Download resources.
